I’m writing papers. One is on Thomas Hart Benton and his “Susanna.” Have I told you this before? Anyway. Here’s Benton’s version.

So the story is,if you don’t know it; Susanna was lusted after by the village elders, who went to her and said, “Have sex with us or we’ll testify that you’re an adultress.” She refused, the thing went to trial, punishment for adultery is death, she prayed to God, who was the only witness. God prompted David to question the elders, and tripped them up. The important bit is “God, who was the only witness.” Okay?
